By default, modulation of device parameters is not turned on in Max for Live, so even though you can automate devices in arrangement view, you can't modulate them in session view. In this tutorial we look at how to change that so you can control ANY device's parameters and any other Ableton controls from any clip!

  • A clip has to be selected for the "Show Modulation" option to be there, whether Session/Arrangement is selected doesn't matter.

This gives me an idea for a simple device that let's you select what kind of modulation you want to use on a parameter, or simply 4 different dials affecting one parameter. I think I still have some way to go before I can do that though :)

  • @ubinator Good Call. I guess I spend far more time in session view, so I'm less familiar with some of the behaviours in arrangement view. It's worth noting that modulationand automation are not mutually exclusive, so be careful with that! In my thinking modulation is for clips (since that's the only envelope based device control there) and automation is for arrangements since the automation lanes feel right there (in my way of working/thinking).

  • how funny...just asked myself exactly the same question just yesterday as I wanted to automate some stuff with max instruments.

Maybe someone should contact cycling74 with some feedback on this.

  • @fedcba12228fABC I can sort of see why they set it so that the modulation menus aren't automatically overpopulated, but I still think I'd prefer the default to be unipolar rather than none.

  • pppffftttt undo is soft!

    heh....

  • this is great

  • I thought this was disabled to not overpopulate the undo history, which Ableton has said is more important to them for usability, per their maxforlive_production_guidelines.pdf (search for that phrase to find the file).

  • @learnMax yes, think so, too.
