You/ve got a dead cmos battery, disassemble and replace. Deal is without the cmos, you're bios isn't recognizing the hard-drive.....hope you've moved on since Dec.

@swimpat16 It might be the cmos battery or bios battery I am not sure because it does not boot at all before I fix the problem. But get a battery that is the same type. find one on ebay maybe. Good luck. ;)

@swimpat16 I was able to fix the problem. For some reason the laptop does not like windows xp at some point. I installed windows 8 customer preview recently and it loads. It load 7 and vista too. It does not like xp anymore. I even updated the bios to HP bios and still does not work with xp. You may need to install 7 or Linux.
