Short-n-Sweet Food Network Challenge Audition 2010-12

"I want to go head-to-head on Challenge against the best in the industry to hopefully win and give my parents the gift of a trip to Hawaii to see our new Bakery and Cafe and to really make them proud of my accomplishments in my baking career!" - Maria Short

Short-n-Sweet Bakery and Cafe Food Networks Cake Challenge short audition reel for the start of 2011. Recorded on December 17, 2010 at the store in Hilo, Hawaii. Maria Short, the proprietor, is featured in a set of several vignettes totalling about six minutes.

Maria agreed to let me take the creative route: to use real-life unscripted action from the store on a randomly chosen day, and overlay some short voice-overs to answer the following questions:

•How and why did you get into pastry design?
•What are your best and worst qualities (personality)?
•What is your adventurous side? Passions, hobbies?
•What is an interesting fact about yourself?
•How do you handle a stressful situation?

It REALLY is that crazy at Short-n-Sweet on a regular basis, it seems! I chose a completely random day to do the shoot and there was absolutely no pre-planning. Luckily, Maria and her husband Dien and the other workers soon forgot I was there, so things played out very naturally.

It was very hard to fit everything into a five-minute type format; I had to cut some other really good stuff, like when a very heavy 20qt mixer vibrated itself right off its stand and fell onto the floor with a huge CRASH! and poor Maria almost died from sorrow at the sight of it! (You can see the mixer running at about 1:43 into the video.)

This video was shot on a Sony PD-150 camera and edited in Final Cut Pro by me, Kaliko Trapp. I used a small Sony wireless mic setup on Maria to better catch her voice as she worked and to capture the voice-over at the end of the day.
