The film "Interactive nano journey" illustrates part of the project "Oberflächenwelten" ("surface worlds"), which enables one to directly experience the micro and nano worlds. This is realized in a virtual environment created from real measurement data. These virtual worlds can be entered and discovered in a fully interactive way.
The starting point of the installation, described in the film, was to set up an expedition into the small dimensions of micro- and nanostructures. Visualisation and flying through the data was the first step. The ability to "walk on the data" was then achieved, making the expedition more "real".
The image data are imported into a game engine to create three-dimensional, interactive scenes. By using different interfaces (such as Nintendo's Wiimote™ controller or a video camera based body position detection system) the user can easily control their journey through the surface worlds.
Furthermore, it is possible to add physical information and effects to the representation of the surface data. This is an original concept which is not possible with traditional three-dimensional visualisations or films. The system presented can e.g. demonstrate the influence of environmental vibrations on the macro and nano worlds. The amplitude of a vibration can be shown in direct relation to the size of the surface features. Walking through the laboratory may only cause slight turbulences for micron-sized structures, but real earthquakes on the nanoscale. Effects which are only observable on the nanoscale can also be added to the representation.
