Definitions of words should be short, concise, and focus on the essential characteristics of the concept the word refers to. They should consist of a genus (category) and a differentiae (what differentiates this concept from others in the same genus). They should NOT be lengthy descriptions of every single detail that is implied by the word.

And, if I am interpreting this almost-a-sentence correctly, then there should be a period or a question mark in between "definition," and "why."
