A collection of precious dinosaur footprints, described as one of the most spectacular and scientifically important discoveries in the UK, has been moved to its new home with the help of Viridor funding.
£325,000 was awarded to Oxfordshire County Council to help preserve, transport and showcase the footprints, which are more than 168 million years old.
The footprints, which are from the Megalosaurus dinosaur (a smaller cousin of the tyrannosaurus Rex), were transferred by crane from the Oxford barn they were stored in, to their new home at Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock. Part of the Viridor funding was used to fund the public display for the footprints in a walled garden within the museum.
Within the exhibition at the museum, the footprints are accompanied by a life-size replica of a Megalosaurus and surrounded by plants from the Jurassic period.
The grant has also funded a film which documents the story of the footprints, presented by nature and wildlife presenter Chris Packham of Really Wild Show fame. As well as showing the film in the museum, a DVD version will also be distributed to schools in the Oxfordshire area.
