Orejuana (decks) and Killc (Ableton and cuts) are back with another late night minimal techno jam session.
We tweaked the setup considerably this time. We added another laptop to separate Serato and Ableton, giving each of us more control. We also swapped the M-Audio Axiom 25 midi controller for a Behringer BCR 2000 (more knobs!).
We focused on long mixes, experimenting with different clips in Ableton and delay effects on the decks and cuts. We were pleased by the hardware improvements and are still mulling over some fine tuning.
Parts 1, 2 and 3 should be viewed sequentially.

  • I run;

    Technics DZ-1200

Two computers running Ableton live, FL-8 Studio, Reason, Cubase, Audition, More

Not to mention about a zillion VST's

A classic ensoniq VFX, Axiom 25

    Mackie control, Behringer control

    There is more...

I am willing to bet that if we lived closer, we would be cutting up tracks together :D

    LOL " I guess I was a little but of a $#!+ head yesterday."

  • No worries brother... i posted the video to share and get feedback, both positive and negative.

I totally agree with you in terms of the 'art of turntables'. The most impressive techno performances I remember were strictly turntables... Marco Carola, Adam Beyer, Derrick Carter, Josh Wink and Luciano. The Grand Masters have a way of making magic without excessive hardware.

And if you are in my hood I always love making noise :-)

  • Mama always said " If you cant say anything nice" I never listened to my mother. There is way to much gear doing the work these days. It just takes alot of the magic from it.

BUT...I have to admit, It sounds good.

PS- I have been spinin' clubs for over 20 years. Urei 1620 and two SL-1200

I am sure I will get hate mail now LOL

  • No hate over here brother...

Why does more gear diminish the magic?

Is a painter or a sculptor limited to only a few tools/colors/mediums?

Is good sounding music a function of the amount of gear or what kind of gear?

And I'm not sure how to replicate what we did with less than three turntables, two mixers and something to output beats.

In fact, if we wanted to use hardware for everything we'd have much more 'gear'.

And the 'magic' can happen at any time, no matter how much or how little gear.

  • For example... I saw Abe Duque recently. He uses a 'buffet' of all kinds of gear and his performance was certainly magical.

I've seen many other live performers use a myriad of gear and a laptop.

In the DJ paradigm, I do agree however that magical things can come out of a simple two turntable and mixer setup (without effects).

Hardware or 'gear', especially a laptop and software (Ableton Live), have revolutionized the DJ and live performance and can't be compared to the traditional DJ model.

  • This is fantastic, a significant improvement; not only is this a really tight performance, but the music itself is enjoyable as hell.

  • Thank you...

We have some tweaks for next time :-)

  • you spend hella time beat matching that record.. lol.. get that shit down.. ive been djing for like 10 years, and that was something that i mastered hella fast.. haha..

but you guys do sound good.. i totally dig it..

if you ever need any tips or anything, i could probably hook up some advice, as well..

  • nice mix, like your gear and how you are able to rock it.

  • lmao... dudes dancing in the middle. sounds good though!

  • I guess what I was trying to say it, You see alot of videos with automated gear on youtube as the art of the turntable fades to black. I am not a bitter person. just making a observation. infact, I myself have a studio setup that it quite automated. CONT.

  • good job !
