Deception Island may be just a tiny speck in the ocean but it's surprisingly rich in history. We uncover a tale of ghosts, volcanic eruptions and imperial power plays.
"It's a haunting place where tendrils of steam rise from the active volcano beneath the sea," describes journalist Paul Willis. Settled by Europeans as a whaling station in the 19th Century it has been fought over ever since.

Also looking for it. It is almost certainly performed by Norvegian singer Agnes Buen Garnas.

I was 9 years old when my Father was one of those air lifted off the island in 1968 by Chilean Navy helicopters - he was one of 2 pilots (Flt.R.P.Vere) who were flying scientists etc across the pennisula for 18 months - the remains of the Otter aircraft was the one he flew !
I have the photos of when it was in better condition !
Sadly not with us now ,but he wouldn't be able to get his head round the fact you can now call in on a holiday cruise !

I was at Deception Island in January 2009 & it is the most eery, solemn, ghostly place you could ever imagine. The water in t he bay was cold to get into but the hot spa was pure delight. Get there if you can, it is amazing.
