WW1 wasn't just the Western front , Air war and Gallipoli. Many people forget the Eastern Front , Southern Front , The Balkens , Caucasus , Persia , Mesopotamia , Sinai , Palestine , South Arabia , Africa Wars , Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Campaign.

I remember BBC2 showing a retrospective of Kubriks work, this little know film came on that night. Anything with Kirk Douglas had to be glammed up, or so I thought... Turned out to be perhaps the most chilling, intense and intelligent war movie I have ever seen. Absolutely riveting, a cinematic masterpiece , the benchmark for all war films IMO

WW1 Generals were butchers more or less whom seemingly cared very little for their men. Not to mention how incredibly senseless this War was to begin with. Add to that-- desperate, futile, poorly coordinated assaults for strategically pointless reasons.

Casualties do not tell the story my friend.

No offense to you or the French, but we had good generals in WW2. We made good use of our soldiers, and didn't piss them away like cannon fodder.

Human wave warfare is stupid tactics, and should NEVER be implemented on the battlefield.

I defended France against somebody's ignorant statements against her. I also didn't claim the the Civil War was as bad as those great wars in Europe. I'm not trying to claim any American superiority, but your insistence at American inferiority is probably a bit exaggerated. War is terrible, be it small or grand in scale. Europe has suffered war more terribly than America has, but to believe an American cannot comprehend that war is awful & demands horrible sacrifices is an error on your part.

True. I was not stating about the loss of life, I was just telling the people who read comments in that the war was not just the Western / Eastern / Italian Front and that there were a lot more Places WW1 was fought at.

American Civil War is about 500,000 dead for a country with a huge population. Don't compare with the Napoleonic wars, WW1 or WW2 while European countries (with a population by far lower than the USA) lost millions and millions of men. So yes I don't like when a stupid American speaks about sacrifice at war... because the USA don't have lessons to give about that.

This is an urban legend. This movie has never been banned in France but in Spain (the movie has been unbanned in Spain in 1975 with the end of Franco's regime).

You have small opinions of the French military? More French soldiers are dead for their country ONLY in WW1 than American soldiers in ALL the wars fought by the USA since 1776.

So it makes me laugh when I see some Americans speaking about military bravery and sacrifice. Don't compare your minor involvment in WWs and all the minor/insignifiant wars you fought with how the millions of French and Europeans dead in the Napoleonic wars and World Wars on their own ground.

As for WW1, it was NOT a Franco-German war, the war doesn't even begins with France but with Russia, Austria, and Germany. And France played a more important role than the UK. Think about it. So fuck you engaylish scum.
