Pop Muzik was one of the first new wave singles to top the charts. The singles popularity was bolstered by this catchy video that featured Scott as a DJ singing from behind turntables, and flanked by two female models providing the additional vocals... Or do they? One of the sight gags in the video depicted Brigit Novik dressed in blue who actually recorded the backup vocals which were mimed by the models. The song went on to have global success and had "everybody talkin' 'bout Pop Muzik". The original clip from1979. Boogie in a suitcase. Pop, pop, pop muzik.

I remember the controversy about "Ghost Busters" sounding similar to "I Want A New Drug", because of the same basic chord pattern. This one also has the same pattern - but came out before the other two.

I honestly thought this was DEVO when I first heard it. It even sounds kind of like Mark Mothersbaugh.

Thank you. I was meaning the more "mainstream" audience colloquially. (I suppose I could have more properly stated "before -I- knew what it was going to be." The song does have a very similar sound to some of the work of current rap artists, making it sound eerily fresh here some 34 years later. Cheers!

I wouldn't exactly say before "anyone" knew about it. Perhaps if you're strictly referring to mainstream audiences who didn't listen to any music by black artists. Rap/hip-hop has its origins in Jamaican dancehall music from the 1960s. They were rapping back then. Rap was already being performed and recorded in America in the 1970s before this song was recorded. Some people even credit Blondie for being the "first rapper," which is ridiculous.
