World in Conflict: Soviet Assault is a expansion pack developed by Massive Entertainment and Swordfish Studios for the real-time tactics video game World in Conflict. It features the ability to play as the Soviet Union, against which the player fought in the original World in Conflict.[5]
Soviet Assault was going to be released in Q4 2008 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as a stand-alone game, and for Windows-based PCs as an expansion pack. However, the console versions have been cancelled.[6] It features new missions in the single player campaign and will integrate these new missions with the current US campaign, meaning the two will be interwoven with one another. The gameplay features reinforcements that can be called onto the battlefield by either using the context menu or voice communication using the headset.[7]
On July 29, 2008, Activision dropped World in Conflict: Soviet Assault, among other games from their productions, putting the future of World in Conflict: Soviet Assault in question. On August 6, 2008, Activision Blizzard put up Massive Entertainment for sale. On November 11, Massive was acquired by Ubisoft. On January 22, 2009, Ubisoft announced the March 2009 release of the Windows version of the game. March 27, 2008 - It's hard not to love World in Conflict, Sierra and Massive's epic World War III real-time strategy game for the PC. Between the dazzling visuals, the thrilling gameplay, and Alec Baldwin's soothe narration--not to mention an awesome tactical nuke or two--it was easily one of the very best games of 2007. Just about the only thing missing--as noted by many gamers--was the lack of a Soviet or Red Army campaign to let you have fun pummeling those snooty capitalists. Well, that's about to change, comrade.

The latest cover story in the Czech-language edition of The Official Xbox Magazine has revealed the next game in the series: World in Conflict: Soviet Assault. Rest assured PC gamers, just because it was revealed in an Xbox-centric magazine doesn't mean that Sierra or Massive are abandoning you. An Xbox 360 version of World in Conflict was announced last year. Now the 360 version is getting a new name, and it will include both the original World in Conflict along with the new content in Soviet Assault.

Since World in Conflict already shipped for the PC last year, Soviet Assault will be treated like an expansion pack, according to a Sierra representative that we checked with. So if you already own World in Conflict, you won't have to buy the game again to get the Soviet Assault campaign. Just pick up the expansion separately, though Sierra will undoubtedly combine them into a single PC package at some future date.

According to the magazine report, the Xbox 360 game will feature voice commands, smaller multiplayer maps that support 10 players (the PC game supports 16), and the usual assortment of new units. It'll be interesting to see if those voice commands carry over to the PC game. We're also wondering if Sierra will carry on the strong tradition of excellent voice acting and musical licensing in the expansion. After all, World in Conflict featured Baldwin and a host of top-notch voice talent, as well as an 80s-themed soundtrack with bands such as Whitesnake. Who knows, maybe the Leningrad Cowboys are available? Soviet Assault will ship this fall.
