1990: Rioting inmates take over Strangeways
Up to 1,000 prisoners are running amok in Strangeways Prison in Manchester in a violent riot in which at least three prisoners are reported to have been killed.
The rioting began this morning during a service in the prison chapel, attended by about 300 inmates. It is believed the action may have been planned in advance as a protest against conditions at the jail.

I was in there twice in the 70s and the screws were fucking animals and even worse with the coloured lads.some even walking round with NF badges on.The rioters had real grievences and changed the prison system in this country for the better and forever

@mightywhite41 Overcrowding, accusations of staff brutality and the general conditions these men had been kept in caused a rooftop protest. Of course, attempts from police and warders to get them down only angered them further; inmates started stripping off roof tiles to hurl at them. Arson, physical blackmailing and many "copycat" riots at other prisons followed. What a great justice system we have!
