Amtrak 66 delayed on CSX

The following was filmed on May 15, 2008, at Lee Hall, VA. I stopped to observe a WESTBOUND empty coal train stopped at a red signal on #1 track. Soon afterwards, Amtrak 66 (also WESTBOUND) pulled up along side on #2 track. For those who don't know, the two tracks merge into one track about 5 miles ahead near Williamsburg, VA.

Anyhow, the Amtrak train calls out for foreman about 8 times (I recorded 3 of the call outs) with no luck. Then Amtrak changes to AAR channel 14. Meanwhile, the foreman calls back on the original frequency, and Amtrak doesn't hear the replies. In all, 13 minutes wasted before things get moving.

Maybe the foreman was task saturated, or radio range was weak, but the comms breakdown was unfortunate.

Nice KL5A on the CSX train, who moves westbound after Amtrak. Amazing, this empty coal train was about 120 cars long, but he accelerated quite fast as he pulled away from Lee Hall.

how did you do the radio sounds? Its really cool

I just held my portable scanner close to the microphone on my digital camera. There are a couple of times late in the video when you can see the scanner pop into the field of view of the camera. Nothing high tech...except maybe the video editing where I added text. Thanks for watching.

He isn't contacting the dispatcher, he is contacting the foreman in charge of a work crew, requesting permission to proceed through the protected limits.

Thank you as well. The Marysville,PA area is along the NS Pittsburgh mainline. It can see a lot of trains every day. Our Conrail Historical Society's president lives there, and we have our picnic's at his house, right next to the tracks. How cool is that.

You might want to try not holding the scanner so close to the camera. I think at :55 it says "Amtrak P066 over"
