my mother hated this kid, but I personally feel sorry for him. His parents neglected him, never showed him any parenting love of any kind.
I love this movie if only for Joshua.

@hempjuggalo01 please scroll down the page and read. Branding and labeling - what does that explain? Nothing at all. Of course he was "ill-adjusted" which is another way to say "sociopath"; but why? How? In what way? What did he dream of, to what yearned?
narcissist... not. Narcissist is content with himself, has no reason to create. Real creation is always a painful quest. Joshua wasn't playing or composing his music in order to get ahead in life, right?
He was self-centered; alone; genius.

his genious wasn't nurtured enough. that's a specific kind of neglect this film's all about. all he ever wanted was to play piano with his uncle. there was no connection with his parents at all, in anything. that's another kind of neglect, a very real one.

The mom didn't really seem to want anything to do with him. I think she wanted to love him but she didn't know how because she had a real hard time when he was a baby to the point of post partum depression, the dad tried to bond with Josh but didn't understand him because they were too different.
