The real-time opening sequence of Outcast, an adventure game released in 1999 by Infogrames and Belgian developer Appeal. Discarding 3D acceleration technology in favor of a software-based voxel renderer, Outcast was the first PC game to feature bump mapping, depth of field, and other visual effects that didn't become commonplace until the arrival of pixel shaders several years later.

  • 1999... so many years have passed since then...but this game will stay forever in my heart

  • This game was its time so much ahead. A truly fantastic and unique game which will remebered. Great music, great atmopshere and great gameplay and story. Its sad that Appeal couldn't survive. If i had to choose for this game between 3D graphics and Voxel engine i would still take Voxel as it looks so naturally, organic and atmospheric something totally forgotten today. The water reflections were a serious progress when this game was released and miles ahead of any shader on a NVIDIA.
