Seems pretty logical to me. Why give a scarce kidney to an 80 year old guy with only a few years to live instead of a 30 year old that has a family to support.

Doctors use triage all the time in emergency situations and it is just a fact that a younger person with exactly the same health problem as an old person is going to have a better chance of survival than the old person.

@Martian- young vs. old. I wish it were that simple. Do some old people have more "value" than younger people? or does that matter at all?

if young is better than old..please kill yourself and donate your organs to someone younger than you.

I don't have any health problems but if there were 2 (or 10) people going for 1 new kidney then I say give it to the person that is going to make the most of it. If there are plenty of kidneys for everyone then everyone can have them. This only deals with shortages when there is not enough for everyone, someone has to miss out. If everyone is the same then it sounds like communism not democracy.

So a 60 year old, smokes 2 packs a day and wants a new lung, someone else is younger and doesn't smoke. Who do you give it to?

The government stockpiles drugs to use in an emergency and the first priority is inoculation of doctors, military personnel and government officials (police, fire etc.). Do you think that they should hand it out to everybody and hope they have enough? No (I hope not anyway). People just have to make those calls so society can get the greater benefit.

I don't know what kind of a world you are living it. The economy obviously supports the age group which will promote it's sustenance! Whether you find it ethically right or wrong, that is the harsh truth. Young people will obviously be more valued than the old people.

Well, I say leave the babies alone. We need children to work in future sweat shops. The old people can be put to work too. The ones that are incapable of work, get ground up into dog food. It is the most efficient this way.

@beckyfuge I think that you mean survival on the richest not the fittest. If there is a shortage of something that is a 'need' then it should go to the person that would get the best use of it not someone that is richer. If there is a shortage of a 'want' then the richest can have it.
