Super short video of my 1926 Buescher True Tone Alto Sax. My batteries went dead on my camera...sorry. Anyway, for those of you looking to compare saxophones, this might help. Hope to add more videos later.

  • What mouthpiece do you use? I just purchased a 1926 Alto too and using the original Buescher mouthpiece. My tone is wacked out right now. I normally play tenor and so if you have an recommendations on how to tame this True Tone, let me know. :)

  • Hi. This Buescher didn't come with any mouthpiece, so I swiped a mouthpiece off my old Vito sax from the 70s. My sax repair guy said that this Vito mouthpiece is very similar to a C* . I don't usually play alto, but this sax was really just too attractive not to buy from a local seller. Anyway, my best advice is to head to a sax shop which has a stash of used alto mouthpieces and ask to try them out one by one, varying the reed strengths and mouthpiece numbers.

  • It's a time consuming process, but it's the best way to understand which mouthpiece is best for you. What type of music do you play? What type of tone are you getting? What type of tone are you wanting to get? No matter which mouthpiece you use, the nature of the TrueTone is give you a thick, deep sound. If you are wanting a buzzy, bright NY sound then you will really have to choose your mouthpieces carefully.

  • I'd suggest a Peter Ponzol Metal or Otto Link NY Metal for that kind of sound. If you want to keep the smokier sound, I'd suggest an Otto Link hard rubber. Dukoffs are wonderful mouthpieces, but if you are having trouble with tone, you might want to avoid them on a Buescher because the combination might give you a wild double volume whammy.

  • I realize all this is very generalized, but again, the only real test is trying out each mouthpiece in person. Hey, is your Buescher a 200XXX or 100XXX serial number series?
