I was 4 years old when Amoco blew up and I remember much of what happened. That fire burned out of control for a week. Threw me out of bed to the other side of the bedroom. Grandma picked me up as I was crying my butt off. It was like an A bomb was dropped on Whiting.

My Father owned Bialon Music at 1932 Indpls Blvd. I can remember that there was gas running down by the curbs and people screaming..the sky was black.. it was horrific . A friend of mine had a piece of a tanker go through his house, through several rooms, and while he was in bed- cut off part of his leg. We live about 2 blocks down from White Castle and across from Caesars.

my father owned calumet marine supply business close to it, our house only a couple miles away on parrish in e. chicacgo. the blast was very early morning. i thought at first it was "The Atom Bomb" I'd recently heard talked about (i was 6). relieved it wasn't a bomb, i enjoyed the excitement of everyone in the streets in pajamas... later, we learned of some severe injuries and deaths, one of whom was a classmate at st. pat's. and dad's store windows broke from the blast.
