  • Hi Joe,

    Hey Joe,

I will be putting up (in the basement) some 7 apple Xserves, 4 Dell 2950,s, 4 Dell 2850 and some switches and appliances but and its great to feel i am not the only crazy person around....or smart...a data center I talked to said it would cost about 11,000 to colo them...Do you mind sharing about how much its costing you (power bill) a month to run this setup? Thanks

  • Hi,

What raises your power bill; it’s the air conditioning unit because the heat generate by the servers and appliances. If you find the way to extract the heat direct from the servers, your air conditioning will be more efficiency and your power bill will be lower. If you can find a server cabinet with a fan at the top to extract the heat from the server rack to outside with 8” flexible duct will be the best choice to save money.

  • Using the bottom of the rack for cool air intake and the top for heat exhaust, will keep you servers and basement cool. My setup it’s with the about spec and my power bill raise up about $70.00.

  • We have a server rack with coresite in Miami for $500.00. Power is separate 20 amp circuit with 120VAC is $240 and internet is about $100 If you need this service you can contact Michelle at 305-325.8448 she can help you in any available state. Hope this information is helpful. Thanks…

  • What do you use it for? I got like one custom home server with 2x xeon E5620, 8 gb ram, and 2 tb space. I use that for streaming my music and movies to all tv's in the house with apple tv.

But you have soo many servers, what can you possible use it for?

  • Oye joe me gusta tu setup, pero.. si viene un ciclon vas a pasar tremendo susto, deberias considerar un colo, si necesitas avisame y te recomiendo algo bueno y barato. Saludos.

  • and yet the apple time capsule beats this XD

  • Nice setup... I can relate to the heat problem. I have a home office with my half rack stuffed with Poweredge 1850's and they kick out a ton of heat. I use a basic ventilation system... open the window. ;-) When I'm not home it's all locked up with fans circulating throughout. Average temp in the home office is 76deg. Closing the door would certainly cause some type of systematic failure. If you live in the Seattle area, the PSE company will provide power consumption stats.

  • Very nice, I have a similar setup in my home, except I run fiber between my switches and two telco-closets with 24 port patch panels to each room of the house. I have Cisco routers setup, and have a 10/10 fixed wireless connection for $600 a month with a class C 255 IP addresses which I divide up using VLSM.

  • @webplusonline Thanks for getting back to me. I have been shopping around for colo and my its expensive! I can get racks dirt cheap...My internet company can provide a up to 100Mbps downloads speed and Up to 5 Mbps upload speed...350 GB monthly transfer limit. I am hoping to use this. I plan on deploying Asterisk on some 6 machines and retain a couple for my dev...how would you go about "using the bottom of the rack for cool air and the top for heat exhaust?" what do you mean here? thanks
