Belleville Stories
(75 minutes; post-production)

Chinese-American filmmaker MA Shumin is fascinated by the current shift of the Franco-Chinese community from Paris' traditional "Chinatown" of the 13th arrondisement to the growing immigrant community of Belleville. Thus, "Belleville Stories", a feature-length film consisting of a series of portraits of the people belonging to the immigrant community of Paris' 19th and 20th arrondisements, was born.

Populated by Polish Jewish immigrants, survivors of the Shoah, after WWII, North African Jews flocked to Belleville fleeing the wars of the 1960's. The North African Muslim community soon followed, making the backbone of Belleville a North African Jewish and Muslim neighborhood, largely Moroccan and Tunisian, rich with culture. Immigrants from the Caribbean, West Africa, and China soon followed...as did the young artists...

"Belleville Stories" will not only speak of the challenges faced by the members of this community, but also of their hopes, dreams, and successes as they tell us about their journies to build new homes and new lives in France...

The film is dedicated to Chulan Zhang Liu and Raphael Haddad, two victims of recent unrest in the neighborhood, in hopes that the diverse peoples and cultures represented in Belleville may continue to thrive in peace, and also to the fathers of the filmmakers, Rong Shung Ma and Abraham S. Anderson, both immigrants to the United States.
_______________________________________
