If your MR2 is more than 100K miles old, your ball joints could probably use a replacement. My MR2 had about 137K miles at the time of this video. After replacing the ball joints, I realized how much better the car feels with new ball joints. This is a recommended repair for freshening up your suspension!

Anyways, here is a video demonstrating some of the steps of removing and replacing the ball joints on a 2nd generation Toyota MR2. In the video, I am replacing the front ball joint, but these steps are very similar to what needs to be done in the rear.

Tools used for this repair:

1) Metric Sockets
2) Breaker bar
3) Pitman Arm Puller (available for sale/rental at Autozone part 27022)
4) PB Blaster (for loosening up any rust)
5) Hammer

If there are any errors, advice, or questions for me, please let me know. This was the first time I replaced the ball joints but it was not a terrible repair and is possible alone. If you have breaker bar finesse, it is definitely doable!

*Disclaimer/Warning: I am not responsible for any damage/injury/loss that may incur after watching this video and attempting the repair. Please be safe when working under your car by using jack stands and keeping your wheels under the frame of the car, just in case the jack stands fail. Always use personal safety equipment when necessary. Be smart, be safe, and have fun!

  • does the same puller work on the rear or do you need the bigger one?

  • @zenuke The same one works for the rear too!

  • Did just like you except I broke the pitman arm puller on a rear balljoint. Any advice?

  • @LestatThirteen

First of all, get that pitman arm puller replaced. PB Blaster works wonders on rust, so spray a generous amount on the night before and even a little bit before you go at it again. If that does not work, you can also try hammering out the old balljoint. This is especially worthwhile if you have the control arm off of the car and in a vice.

I guess another thing you can try is applying some heat to it? I've never done this, but it works in other applications.

  • Who is the guy doing the work, does he have a You tube channel...?

  • Good info...nice job.

  • Actually got a tie rod puller and it worked! The thing fired across the garage but it came out. Thanks for the help!
