Yes, that's what it says in the English version, but not in the Japanese version. I personally think Woolsey was nicely creative in this part.

From how I understand it, in the Japanese version this puzzle means "Rest in peace" if spelled one way; if spelled backwards, it essentially means something like "Rot and wither." It's not really translatable into English so Woolsey had to come up with something else for the English version.

I think its something like "The world is square", meaning SquareSoft, a little Easter Egg in FF6 :)

ah yes, the 'Four Tombstones Puzzle' of Daryl's Tomb.

I would find mild humor if they expanded it to five tombstones and made the fifth one say "Xine" to complete the puzzle.
