Layla had always been a healthy child but at around 16 months her sleep habits and appetite started to change she started to become more irritable and her appetite began to decrease. Beginning of May 2009 Layla woke up one morning with a swollen eye. We took her to the doctor and she was treated for an ear infection and the doctor said the swelling was just a result of the ear infection. At the same time we noted that her belly was hard and somewhat distended. She had not had a bowel movement for a few days and we were concerned that she was becoming constipated.
Our pediatrician referred us to a GI specialist to see why she was so constipated and wasnt eating. On Thursday May 7th 2009 as we sat in GI specialists office expecting to be told that Layla would need some kind of treatment for constipation we instead heard words like Cancer and Leukemia. Layla had a massive cancerous tumor (Stage 4 Neuroblastoma) in her abdomen. It extended from above her left kidney, around her side, over her belly and wrapped around her aorta. In addition, the cancer was in her bone marrow.
We found out on January 22nd 2010 that Laylas cancer had come back. The doctors told us to expect to have 2-6 more months with her. Towards the beginning of February, Layla became very fussy. After a few days of this, I took her to the doctor. During the exam, the doctor felt a large mass that wasnt on the scans 2 weeks prior. She had another scan done that day that revealed 2 large new tumors. We were told to prepare ourselves for only about a month with her.
March 9th sweet little Layla Grace Marsh went to Heaven.
She is now dancing with the Angels and looking over her sisters Jenna and Claire and her parents Shanna and Ryan.
Please pray for the Marsh family in this extremely difficoult time.
