  • @MdCeA these are good questions. In the Catholic church, there are several rites. The most well known is the Latin one. But there are many more. The second largest is the Byzantine one. 'Orthodox' it is in the sense that it's practices (such as the crosses they make and the ones they sell, the icons, their singing, etc.) are almost 99% similar to the ones known in the Orthodox Church. Yet, referring to Chevetogne, the monks are not Russian (or other) Orthodox, but Roman Catholic.

  • @jvanwielink So actually, they would listen to the Pope AND the metropolite of Constantinopel...?

  • sorry, still wrong :-). Both parts are fully Roman-Catholic, yet one part being according to the Byzantine rite....

  • @jvanwielink Hmmm, you make me doubt, but... why do they make the Orthodox Sign of the Cross then? And how about the Orthodox crosses in the church and even in the shop?

  • Beautiful, of course. Nevertheless, it's NOT Russian Orthodox: the choir (and Abbey) of Chevetogne is Roman-Catholic!

  • @jvanwielink I get the confusion, a part of the abbey is Roman-Catholic, the other part is Orthodox, and of course it's famous because of the Orthodox part. I didn't even know there was a Catholic part untill I spoke one of the fathers...

  • @MdCeA

    read this.

    wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/Eastern_Catholic_Churches

they are Russian Catholic. Same as this church in New York City -> stmichaelruscath(dot)org/

One half of the Monastery is Latin Rite Catholic (Roman Catholic) the other is Byzantine Rite Catholic (Russian Catholic)

  • @MdCeA no, because they are NOT orthodox, their primate (for both parts of the monastery, i.e. both rites) is the Bishop of Rome (the Pope).

  • @MdCeA one could say (as dit Pope John Paul II) that the Churhc breaths through two longs: the Latin en the Byzintine one. Yours, Br. Jakob
