At first it looked like a fast flowing river, but then realised it was the receeding tide rushing through a narrow bottleneck that separates Loch Etive & the sea. We had passed the bridge at Connel the previous day on our way to Oban & caught a glance of the "river rapids". The next day when going back the way, we realised "the river" was flowing the other way!!.......so we stopped to investigate. Several Herons were perched at various points around the bridge. When we got home i looked on-line for any more info on the rapids. Wikipedia says that Loch Etive is a sea loch approximately 30miles long & 1mile wide in parts. At certain times of the year in particularly high or low tides, all that volume of water tries to pour back into the sea.....but the mouth of the loch narrows where the bridge at Connel is, thus causing some spectacular rapids & whirlpools. Check Wikipedia for more info on the Fall of Lora.......or check them out for yourself!!
