Michel Legrand has composed wonderful melodies and Marilyn and Alan Bergman have written fabulous lyrics for many of them. "How Do You Keep The Music Playing?" is one of the most moving and emotional songs from this dream team. Tony Bennett sings it with a spectacular ending as a fitting climax for an emotion draining rendition. You think he can't possibly go any further, and he then proves you wrong. He combines the vocal luminescence of Luciano Pavarotti with the histrionic finesse of Lawrence Olivier.

My totally different recording is suitable for quiet late night listening. I have added new verses to take the story line further in the direction hinted at by the original lyrics. Do let me know if you can pick out the fake from the original verses. And better still, tell me whether you like them. Sorry to make you work so hard.

This song is also Part 6 of the never ending tale of Sad Lover. If he/she wants it to last, the advice is for the couple to be best friends as well as lovers. I have not done a survey but I am sure all spouses would prefer to be called their husband's best friend than his favourite cook. No brainer. Paul Newman was a good cook - proves my point.

How do you keep the music playing?
How do you make it last?
How do you keep the song from fading too fast?
How do you lose yourself in someone?
And never lose your way
How do you not run out of new things to say?
And since we know we're always changing
How can it be the same?
And tell me how year after year
You're sure your heart will fall apart
Each time you hear her name

I know the way I feel for you
It's now or never
The more I love the more that I'm afraid
That in your eyes I may not see forever forever
If we can be the best of lovers
Yet stay the best of friends
If we can try with every day to make it better as it goes
With any luck, then I suppose the music never ends

The woods are at their most resplendent
When all the leaves are gold
How do we stop our love becoming cold
How do we stoke the flames of passion
And keep them bright and strong
How do we make the deep emotion prolong
The things we had at the beginning
Will see us to the end
The passing years will not
Diminish what I feel for you
My love will ever transcend
