Lambroghini

The Lamborghini has dedicated followers that rival all its competitors, Ferrari, Porsche, and Aston Martin. Many consider Lamborghini the magnum opus of automotive engineering.

In the 1960s there was plenty of room in the automotive market for exciting new automobiles and Feruccio filled those open spaces with refined grand touring vehicles that exemplified refinement, power, comfort and success.

But the world was changing. Feruccio just didn't see the 1970s coming.

Companies like Automobili Lamborghini, who manufactured goods from scratch - not to mention depending on oil to accomplish that very goal - couldn't survive the worst stock market meltdown in modern history. Adding salt to an open wound, the Yom Kippur War leading up to the oil shock of 1973-74 was a combination punch in the gut, then to the chin of the automotive industry the world over.

In 1974, Ferruccio sold the remaining stake of his company to René Leimer.

The Silhouette was the first failure without Ferruccio's direct input. Poor quality, reliability and ergonomics were a disappointment and the fact that it could only be imported to the U.S. unofficially or unauthorized didn't help sales for the Silhouette. Only 54 were produced.

The company went bankruptcy in 1978.

The Countach would become an automotive icon during the mid-seventies, but actual sales for Countach were also hampered by lack of direct participation in the American market.

The Cheetah, a rear engine Chrysler V8 prototype, was built for military use, only to be destroyed during testing, resulting in the loss of that contract, started a domino effect that led to the cancellation of the BMW M1 contract.

In 1980, the Swiss Mimran brothers were appointed to Lamborghini during its receivership by the courts. Reviving the failed Silhouette as the Jalpa.

In 1982 Countach was finally available for sale in America as an updated model LP500.

1984 The Mimran brothers poured large amounts of capital into the company. The Sant'Agata manufacturing plant was retooled. New designers and engineers were hired.

1986 the colossal 455 hp Countach Quattrovalvole arrived along side the LM002 sport utility vehicle. But it wasn't enough to sustain the company.

Becoming part or the Chrysler Corporation in 1987. The American company failed to profit, by 1994 Chrysler sold the brand to Indonesia.

It seemed that no one could bring the brand out of financial quicksand. I've always been under the impression that companies don't dump assets or capital into products that have a history of proven failure and since 1974 this is exactly what Automobili Lamborghini was. These machines have been supported for thirty years without making profit. This strikes me as a greater engineering accomplishment than the cars themselves!

In 1998, Audi's ownership marked the beginning of stability and high production for Lamborghini accomplishing Record sales by 2007.

Some people have a grievance against the Audi Lambo. I don't subscribe to that kind of thinking because if it wasn't for Audi They would have no Lambo to criticize.

2011 Assembly continues at the original factory in Sant'Agata Bolognese, where engine and automobile production occur under one roof. Fewer than 3,000 of these multi-million dollar cars roll off the assembly line each year.
