This is probably one of the most romantic scenes in film history. I love it so much that I wanted to share it with others.

Gwynplaine, (Conrad Veidt) a man whose mouth was mutilated into a fixed grin, is now returning home after being tempted by the Duchess Josiana to leave Dea, the woman he loves. Waking to find him home, Dea, who is blind, feels Gwynplaine's smile for the first time.

  • today, tues. 8/23 TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES, devoted the entire day to films by the great CONRAD VEIDT, who is truly a great actor. the mainstream has practically forgotten about him, like a lot of great artisits. VEIDT, who fled HITLER'S GERMANY in the 30's was always hung-up on his german accent and turned several "big roles" down because of it..he was an excellent golfer..he died in the late 40's. "THE MAN WHO LAUGHS" produced by UNIVERSAL STUDIOS was very bizarre yet touching at the same time.

  • @801liveable WHAT?! NO WAY!!!! First I miss Tuner Classic Movies' Lon Chaney day (Monday) and then I miss the one they did for Conrad????!!!!!! Life's not fair!!!!!!!!

    Ahem.

Rant aside, yes, Conrad was an amazing actor and an incredibly wonderful human being. There truly aren't any more like him in today's world.

  • There's a similar scene in 'Mask'. Both great scenes.

  • @MrThePandaman I just watched "Mask" today for the first time. Great movie on its own, but I loved the scene in it similar to this one. Some may call the disfigured guy/blind girl pairing cliche or melodramatic, but I think it's beautiful, when it's done in the right way. And for me, the number one example of this couple is always going to be Gwynplaine and Dea. Hell, they're the quintessential image of true love, period. They're perfect for each other, they were made for each other.

  • how is the name of the song?

  • @josevalerollamas The name of the song is "When Love Comes Stealing".

  • 'God closed my eyes so I could see only the real Gwynplain.'

That is one of the most beautiful sentences I have ever heard.

  • This character is what inspired the creation of the Joker.
