the last bit seems to suggest that this russian song has gypsy origins

@ocha1 this version is arranged by Orekhov, who plays very music in the Gypsy style.

@kpcart sure, but the arrangement highlights/uncovers the gypsy influence in the song itself. most russian folk songs just don't go well with the "gypsy style", yet this one does. I wonder if it was originally created by gypsy musicians - for russian audiences, of course.

@ocha1 it was written to words of a poem by Nikolai Nekrasov. Apparently the music was written as a Hungarian March or Chardash motive, but i cant verify that.

@kpcart Here's what I found: Мелодию песни написал Яков Фёдорович Пригожий (1840 - 1920) - пианист, дирижёр, композитор и аранжировщик-аккомпаниатор известного цыганского хора московского ресторана "Яр".

@ocha1
oh ok, well he was involved with a Gypsys, but i always thought the writer of the melody was unknown, its always been referrerd to as a folk song.
