Michael Llodra famous and funny underarm service vs Roger Federer at third round match of the Toronto Masters 1000 2010.The Swiss cruised into the quarterfinals of the tournament after a 7-6 6-3 win.The Frenchman tried every trick in the book included the tweener.
Both players showed creativity and aggressiveness instead of the more common baseline power game. The crowd loved it and the players enjoyed it too.
The world No. 35 used a strong serve-and-volley game. But the third-seeded Swiss star adjusted midway through the opening set, picking up a break to get back on serve and later take the tiebreak 7-2.
"It is fun playing that kind of a style once in a while," Federer said. "I kind of miss it.At 1-4 in the 2nd set,Llodra throws Federer an absolute curve ball. A rare underhand serve.
"It's the first time I got an underarm serve," Federer said with a laugh. "The third time somebody asked me for the shirt."
Llodra put some sidespin on the serve, causing the ball to jet sideways when it hit the court. Federer barely got his racket on the ball and hit wide
"I just wanted to make something special," Llodra said.
When asked if he'd ever tried it before, Llodra replied: "Yeah, but not in a match."After his defeat, Llodra even asked Federer for his pink tennis shirt."Roger is a legend," Llodra said. "It's a good present for my kids."

  • he should have done it the whole match

  • He doubled next point :p Got one break back too, could've won if not for that

Also, people don't like Hingis, and really liked Graf. That is why she got booed. It wasn't unsportsmanlike on its own. A lot of misinformed people took that to mean you shouldn't serve underhand, I see it a lot with the club player mentality.

Tennis is a game of class. I think anyone with class can understand the nuance of mathematics and competition. I've never seen any intelligent player get upset with an underhand serve. You absolutely must balance your serve speed & trajectory.

  • @mango6

You see it a lot actually in professional tennis, especially in ITF play. Coaches teach it too, good ones anyway.

I think you don't see it as much as you should in the elite ranks because of ignorance for mathematics and some false pride you should be able to win without it. It is similar to NFL coaches punting when the math says to go for it. The expectation of either decision is close, but the psychology of irrational and ignorant people come into play.

  • @dtwplaya im talking about professional tennis. you dont see players doing this every match they play in. neither do you see professional coaches training players to do it. tell me why hingis got boo'ed against steffi graf in the french open... its legal. i think llodra just did it for laughes since he was already down.

  • @mango6

Why should you get booed if you are winning? Part of balancing your range when you have a superior flat service is too serve underhand a certain percentage of the time.

It also is a good idea if you have just played a long point and you have superior fitness (like Chang did). It will force them to come in off balance.

Now obviously there is a Nash equilibrium for this. If you do it too much they will expect it, and when someone is expecting it, it is probably the worst serve to do.

  • I guess its ok (you wont get boo'ed) to do this when you're already getting smoked by Master Federer

  • he didn't have any solutions and he tried that... BUT ROGER ALWAYS GOTS A RESPONSE

  • @mchheav Yes.

  • is that legal? I mean in tennis rules that is.
