Kerr did end up at the arse end of the world and a hundred miles up it where he belonged. And Gough appointed that fucker as GG to the dismay of many including Bob Hawke. I had a long conversation with Gough years ago as he scoffed a bowel of chocolates in a restaurant called Frasers after a book signing event. I like old Gough...but the mind does boggle...

Kerr Ended up learning a lesson. When you've shat on a democratically elected govt to give the opposition the leg up, you end up being despised by the former and never trusted by the latter. Kerr ended a drunken and despised figure whom couldn't carry on as G-G because there was nowhere major he could go in Australia where we his presence was unpleasnt for most. I think the Coalition gave him a non-job in Paris to rid themselves of their embarrasment in the end. He sold out. Shameful old drunk.

Best thing that ever happened....and hopefully the same thing will happen to the current Labor Government....they stand for debt and cannot keep the budget in surplus. Get rid of them FOREVER!

Wasn't that a time? This is where political timidity was born in this country. Now we live under a Murdochracy with jugglers and clowns putting on a show for the dumbed down masses, too lazy to think beyond their own narrow self interest. Yeah, a ship of fools sailing into into the eye of the storm, oblivious to the twin crises of climate change and energy security. Where is the vision, foresight and courage that Gough displayed?

@darthnarodnik ....... Liberals did not do this ..... just a shallow GG!!! Too bad at the following election was a resounding Liberal win. Go figure!!!

I was born on this terrible day. I hate the Liberals for what they did to a democratically elected government. A shameful episode in Australian history. I will always fight for social justice in honour of Gough Whitlam and Jim Cairns.
Love you Gough!

I think he was dismissed because he wanted Australia to get an independent foreign policy and detach us from the monarchy. He was sick of us being the bitch of the UK & US.

One of the reasons that GG Kerr didn't consult with Whitlam is because both believed in the bizarre Aussie idea that the Governor-General could be replaced at the PM's whim, rather than serving like a judge on good behavior. As soon as Whitlam heard the news of Fraser's appointment, he tried to phone the Queen to sack Kerr...as if she would bother doing anything so dramatic at 3 am in London on just a call from a possibly drunk or crazy PM halfway around the world.
