The HRP-3 Promet Mk-II is a blue-collar android tough enough to trudge through heavy rains, carry out disaster relief operations and work in environments hazardous to humans. The robot was unveiled on June 21, 2006 at Kawada Industries headquarters in Tochigi prefecture, Japan, where it showed of its ability to operate power tools and walk on slippery surfaces.

  • This is amazing! I can't believe more people haven't viewed this. This is our future.

  • I know it's amazing that we have walking robots and stuff now... but I think in order for these to become common they must:

    A. Become more fluent in their actions.

    B. Perform actions at a greater speed.

    C. Be able to take orders without complex programming.

Good AI and faster or more efficient processors will really benefit stuff like this.

  • @tuseroni interchangeability and versatility, you can use these robots to supplement the existing workforce, they can be used to operate machinery and tools designed for use by humans, non-humanoid bots with built in tools would be useful as well, and I'm sure we'll see a wide range of them too someday.

  • this robot looks like it will kill you.

however i dont see its purpose. why have a humanoid robot do construction when a non-humanoid could do it better. one built solely for that purpose. it doesnt need hands to grab a drill...it has a drill built into it.

  • finally a robot that looks like it doesn't want to take a shit every time it takes a step! but this is an awesome advancement in robotics

  • Yeah, you're 100% correct. I suppose while it isn't very practical now, it's really just an impressive demo and a stepping stone towards what could be.

  • Well of course, your points are all correct, but this is merely to demonstrate what could be possible in the future. This robot alone would cost in the millions for an individual to obtain. However, due to Moores law, these technologies will become cheaper and faster every year. So, theoretically, we will obtain incredibly intelligent computer systems in the not so distant future.

  • Saw this on BBC -- but it fell over and couldn't get up :(

  • OMFG! We got Robocop, now we just need ED-209and we got ourselves a BRAWL.

  • agree
