The lens was mounted on a Nikon D90 and the zoom was fully extended to 50mm. Long story short, the camera fell from the edge of a table from a height of about 2 1/2 feet.
Now the front end piece is loose and moves freely and the zoom ring only moves from 35-50mm. The lens still takes clear photos in this range (focus works fine auto & manual).
My guess is that something came loose or out of its place inside.
Hello, i have the same similar problem. Although i have a 16-50mm, it is a Pentax edition, (16-50mm DA* ) very similar though. My camera fell of my desk, and after i picked it up, and try to zoom, it would only go to about 28-50mm, it the same as in your case, and there seems to be something lose inside, i yet have to open it up and see what i can do. Let me know if you find a way to fix it, and i'll do the same if i find the problem.

@BoSnIaK4ever I'm not sure I want to open this up myself. The lens will require special tools and knowledge for servicing. I will be sending this in to the repair center soon, I hadn't been able to because of the postal strike here... I will update you with any info if available such as any replaced parts, description of the repair and cost...

@BoSnIaK4ever Finally got the lens serviced.
The zoom mechanism was repaired and the focus was calibrated. The total cost including tax and shipping was ~$270.
Hope this helps.
