'shred -uz $FILENAME' Works better than 'rm $FILENAME', Hwhere $FILENAME is your filename

actually, your ~ is whatever your admin sets it to be. it may be under /home or not. see it with "echo $HOME" or "cd ~ ; pwd" :) Nice basic beginner's 'don't be afraid of terminal'-guide:)
