I joined the Viking Princess at Dover Harbour and we were later joined by the Junior BBV relay team, a group of Belgium youngsters coached by Johan Rycx and Devriendt.
The Junior BBV's consisted of Tim Riviere, Kristof Reybrouck, Daisy Hanssen, Maxim Vanwulpen, Niels Verlinde and Charlotte Anseeuw. As we left the harbour we past a quite unique vessel, Planetstar, a solar power ship that is planning a round the world voyage, it was anchored in Dover on its trail run from Hamburg. It must be very efficient as we saw precious little of the sun!
It was a very cold morning as we headed to Shakespeare beach, this was the second attempt by this team as the first was called off a week earlier due to bad weather.
Tim Riviere kicked us off, a powerful swimmer, as we headed south we kept an eye out for the shooting stars that had been predicted for that night, we did see a few but on the whole it was disappointing. Tim kicks a lot when swimming and he splashed us all on a regular basis, but he made a strong start and we were soon leaving England behind.
Kristof took over at 04:30 just as the first hint of light was show in the east, another powerful swimmer, he takes us very close to the edge of the South West shipping lane before giving way to Daisy.
Daisy took us into the Shipping lane just as the sun rose, it stayed with us for about 10 minutes, and then true to form it hid behind clouds. It was very cold and everyone was wrapped up. Daisy swam well but was uncomfortable swimming on the starboard side, but the swell was to strong for her on her natural side of the boat.
Maxim, a lifeguard, was the teams strongest swimmer, very powerful he attacked the sea as he swam and with a little help from a following sea took us to the edge of the Separation Zone.
07:30 and enter Niels, the youngest swimmer in the team, Niels has excellent pace and style hitting 84 Strokes Per Minute we shot across the separation zone in half an hour. The weather was still cold and damp but Johan (trainer) managed to get some sleep.
We entered the North East shipping lane 08:20 with Charlotte, the teams final swimmer, in the water. Whilst the SW lane had been quiet the NE lane was very busy that day. One particular ship The Hascyanbu, an enormous container ship passed very close.
John Rycx, the trainer, is a diver with the Belgium Air Sea Rescue, and his colleagues arrived to give their support in a Seaking 702 helicopter. It stayed with us for about 5 mins, hovering low and making several passes over the boat. Everyone waved and cheered and the helicopter crew responded. It was an extremely welcome break as it noise blissfully drowned out Niels stereo affording us 5 minutes of blissfully loud tranquillity.
As the ebb tide carried us westwards the swimmer took their turns and at 11:00 we entered the French inner coastal waters, and it was Maxim who finally took us to the shore, accompanied by Niels in the dingy, just north of Audressilles at 13:10.
On the beach to meet them were dozens of family and friends who had driven down from Belgium.
9 hours and 40 minutes is a bloody good time!
