About the Video:
UMMC patient Ward Forsyth became the first person in the United States to use a new, smaller artificial lung system.
In this video, Forsyth explains the advantages of the device and how it helped him to stay healthy until he was able to receive a lung transplant.
The portable device shown in this video is a simplified version of an ECMO machine, which uses a pump to circulate blood through an artificial lung and back to the bloodstream. Prior to the introduction of this new device, a person who was on the system had to remain lying down as a result of the device's large tubes that were placed in his/her neck and groin.
Doctors at the University of Maryland, however, modified the ECMO system in such a manner that only a simple IV line has to be placed in the person's upper chest. This modification allows the patient to sit up, walk, and remain active.
This device kept Forstyh alive and actually enabled him to become a candidate for a lung transplant. He received a bilateral lung transplant at the University of Maryland Medical Center on April 8, 2009.
