Here's a video of me running Earthworm Jim Special Edition for Windows 95 on Windows XP. It's always run awesome for me. The only glitch in XP being that when it tries to play certain sounds the sound stops working completely. It starts working again if you disable and re-enable the sound however.

I apologize for the sound/video quality. This is my first time using Hypercam, an it seems to record the sound loud and distorted and makes the animation choppy. Unfortunately, FRAPS wouldn't work with EWJ95. :(

  • I finally realised why I could never get the sound effects working on XP and it "only" took me 8 years to find out why!

You MUST run the game via the autorun menu (WORMLOAD.EXE) - no need to set any compatibility mode as XP has some internal fixes. If you start WORM.EXE directly then the fixes aren't automatically applied and sound effects don't work, even if you set compatibility mode manually.

BTW I have the "bargain bin" version.

  • The sound always ran perfectly for me when running the game, no matter the version of Windows. Until I started using XP the glich where the sound stops working when encountering the 1 ups, finishing Andy Asteroids, etc. That would be a glitch.

The version I have is the original version with the big ass box.

Either way, doesn't matter now. I have the Sega CD version. No glitches or compatablity issues there. :)

  • Have you tried to run your games on DOSbox?

So you won't have those XP bugs!

  • This is a Windows 95 game...

  • @elbryan42 no. it is a game that will actually run in dosbox :). It looks like windows 95 but actually is dos.

I play it in dosbox on windows 7/vista and works great!

  • There are two EWJ games for the PC. EWJ for Windows 95 (this one), and EWJ1&2 The Whole Can of Worms for DOS. I have both. The ones you download from Steam or GOG are is DOS one.

This is the Windows 95 version. All of the options (controls, level select, sound options) are in the window menu. The game doesn't install (besides a small config file that goes into the root of the c drive), it autoplays off of the cd.

  • EWJ1&2 have each game on seperate discs. They have to be installed. The options are in a setup program and the controls are in the main menu of the game.

  • @elbryan42

Windows 95 has been based developed up from dos ! so every windows 95 game just work fine in dosbox !

  • I'm Nude!

  • @SpyroTheDragon96 It's the cheaper version in a jewel case rather than a box. Comes with an AOL installer on the CD.
