As the standoff between the U.S. Navy has intensified in the Indian Ocean, with the pirates vowing to fight on as the U.S. Navy encircled them, analysts were pointing to the episode as evidence that international naval power may have a limited role in ridding the seas of the pirates. This is a real dilemma! Update: Capt. Richard Phillips rescued by Special Forces, 3 pirates killed, 1 captured and the pirates still holding some 200 hostages from many other countries around the world. 04/12/2009

Somali pirates are like stray dogs. Keep feeding them & they will come back for more. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see a group of men in a cheesy metal tin can boat with a small outboard motor armed with AK-47s & RPGS heading out for the "day's catch". We tried to help Somalia. Nato, the U.N., the Arab League, we all tried. They attacked those who were trying to bring them food and aid and cheered in the streets when International Aid forces left. They honestly thought that when they finally took control of the country the aid agencies would return. Once bitten, twice shy. I hope they enjoy eating dirt.

The pirates can only be stopped by blowing them up in the water. The Russian navy is doing that! The westerners must follow that example. The pirates are bandits and lawless. They are armed to steal and kill. These criminals cannot be rehabilitated by apprehending and kept them in custody for a few days, feed them and release them is a totally wrong move and dangerous. A soft hammer cannot forge a thick inch steel plate - you need a solid steel hammer to forge it.

@shawnlalanne Somali pirates are fishermen who have lost their source of living due to international fishing corporations. Just get away from their fishing grounds and they will immediately stop.
