One last thing (I wish I could have put this all in one comment). I just finished my senior recital this past weekend, and will be posting a video of this piece as well as others fairly soon. As my performance is far from flawless and probably much more ridden with wrong notes than your performance, I would love to hear what you think of my performance as well. As musicians, I feel it very necessary to share these types of comments with each other. Keep up the good work and take care!
However, while every musician has the right to do essentially whatever they want with any piece of music, and while I am never a slave to tempo markings, it is my personal opinion that a lot is lost in this particular piece if it is taken too fast, especially considering that blazing fast was not the composer's intention. (Listen to a clip of Mark Ford's personal rendition of this piece here, or buy his cd). Once again, please do not take this as a knock on your abilities as a performer.
Hey man, it's very clear that you have great technical and musical chops (better than what i have achieved at this point for sure), so please don't mistake this as a knock on that. You mentioned that Frank Gonzales changed some things for the sake of competition. Aside from rearranging/cutting some things out, he also sped the tempo up a ridiculous amount when compared to the written tempos. If this was also your intention, more power to you and ignore everything I am saying.
Forgive me for being oblivious, but it sounds like you repeated some sections weren't written. Would I be right or is Frank Gonzales' arrangement wrong?
Ya I got inspired to play this piece when I saw Frank Gonzales play it on youtube, but when I ordered the piece of SteveWeiss I found it's much longer than what Gonzales does. I think he probably shortened because it was part of a competition. It's pretty wild though, there some spots he totally skips, but no doubt his performance was exceptional
@TheConcealedBagel Yeah my school unfortunately does not have the best equipment. There's a ton of transposing up and down octaves, you may even be able to notice from some awkward movements, but I just really wanted to play the piece. Everything I couldn't play was too low, so I play them usually an octave higher. I also had to make some changes to the original score to cope with this.
Actually, yes! I'm still a beginner at 4 mallets, but I hope to be able to play this soon enough, at least in time for Solo & Ensemble competition next year.
