Sockeye were decaled endangered in 1991 not extinct. There was a fairly strong run just last year. Kokanee actually can be native in the Sawtooth region because of the population of Sockeye. All a kokanee is, is a Sockeye that didn't or couldn't smolt. While most are hatchery raised there are native kokanee in a few Idaho lakes.

These kokanee die after they spawn if they are mature adults, they are a blast to flyfish for, and some of the best eating salmon I have ever had. By the way ohlode, I know exactly where the kokanne you're fishing for is at, one of my favorite places to fish them. I also know exactly where that beautiful trout was caught, I worked on that river for an entire summer. Nice fish and sweet vid!

Just to add to the Kokanee argument, Ohlode is correct. I worked for the Idaho State Fish and Game for a while and am an avid flyfisherman, have been my entire life, born and raised in Idaho. Kokanee in Idaho are land-locked sockeye salmon that were originally raised in the hatchery. They can't actually be "native" because mankind took the stock from the sockeye bloodline and planted them into many of Idaho's reservoirs. Red Fish Lake has the only true Sockeye Salmon, recently declared extinct.

Kokanee are land-locked Sockeye. Native to Idaho and much of the NW. They can be caught on flies during the spawn. They're In the creeks that empty into reservoirs with a population of Kokanee.
