Why is it when I do this that my gradient has no effect whatsoever, have I switched something off by mistake or something?

Make sure you have selected the layer mask when applying the gradient tool effect.

Nvm, I just got it, you just need to click with the Move while in the Layer Style options, so you can place it wherever you want.

Isn't there a way to free transform the gradient effect simply with the Move tool?

You know, resize it, rotate it, raise or diminish the distance between colors... I do remind that Corel Draw has such feature, so PS could also have that.
