SOLUTION:
If AutoSpell etc. does not work: Exit OpenOffice "Quickstarter" in the "Quick Launch" bar.
And it works!

I had a similar problem.
Go somewhere in the options and look for the dictionary.
Am sure the dictionary is enabled to correct your current language (english canada etc)
the only thing you have to do is to change the language to American english (eng us)
