Now imagine a war time scenario with bad weather...
If I was sucking vapors I'd much rather be pulling up with a probe like the one on the Rafale and also a boom with the basket that's NOT RIDGED!!!
One can only imagine aerial refueling accidents with both F-22 and F-35 due to the design and ridged boom required.

Like this system! No nasty probe jutting out the front (retractable or not) of the fighter, so no minimal impact on RCS. Its for the tanker to find the hole and stick it in!
