Video taken from shore along the west side of San Juan Island May 24, 2009. Watching J-14 with her three youngest - Baby J-45, 4 yr. old J-40 and 8 yr old J-37. It looks as if they are having some lessons. They went back and forth for about 20 minutes, offshore, near Lime Kiln Lighthouse before continuing on.

Hi fmorques, you may want to check out my blog, if you don't already. I post pictures and stories about the whales. and last weekend I participated in the Samish Nation Naming Ceremony for J-45. It was oh, so special!
I envy you for having participated to the Naming Ceremony ^^ I've read on your blog that J45 had been named Se-Yi-Chn.. Where does this name comes from ?
Se-Yi-Chn is a Coast Salish/Samish language name meaning 'younger one.' The name was selected by the Samish Indian Nation and given to J-45. The Samish Indian Nation is one of the tribes of the Coast Salish peoples who have lived in the Pacific Northwest for a long long time.
Thank you very much for the informations ! It's a cute name and it suits him although it seems strange at the first view =) It's always the Samish Nation who decide of all the orcas' names ? Thank you for all your answers !
You asked if "it's always the Samish Nation who decide all of the orcas' names?" NO, they only decide on the names for the offspring of the J-14 because her name is Samish. I hope that makes it a bit more clear. thanks.
