This is really cool. I'm guess the images sort of create the sound (I don't know any Russian, wondering if I could get a English translation, or at least summary)

Exactly. The black glass plate is like a spectrogram. You "paint" the "spectrum" on it and then it's analyzed by photodiodes or suchlike. 720 sine wave generators produce a sound whenever the appropriate portion on the glass plate is transparent. An amazing instrument.
