Wonder how the American yuppie environmentalist feel about this. This is a byproduct of their ipod and iphone production.

@MisterAaronRodriguez you criticize but the steel from these works is what the affordable American dream has come to be built of. As bad as this looks, their plastic production is orders of magnitude more harmful. But people still buy their new iphones and what not.

@MisterAaronRodriguez Slag is not enviromentally hazardous. It is used often for base material on roads today. It's highest content is molten calcium carbinate. It looks like black glass. Combine it with carbon and trace metals, there isn't anything more than in normal dirt you pick up. It just stinks because pure carbon stinks. Fake charcoal in gas grills is slag stone. So is fake volcanic stone used in gardens.

the next time some foreign country gets devastated by some cataclysmic flood because of some natural disaster just remember that that's nature's way of getting revenge. This dumping of slag can't be good for the environment - i don't care what you say. This is fucked up - there's just no justifying this. The crap they're dumping is most certainly seeping into the local ground water which in turn makes its way to the faucet. I guess the jokes on you China.

They are tipping molten slag from the steelworks. Slag is the waste product produced during the steel making process. See my You Tube video China Steam, Anshan Steelworks for some shots of a slag being tapped from a blast furnace.

Is the steam fleet of China completely retired now?

Hi,
Main and branch line steam finished several years ago on China's National Rail system. However it is just still possible to see standard and narrow gauge working steam at some industrial locations. China is very big and what is left is well spread out. Look at Bernd Seiler's excellent FarRail Tours website for great photos and info where steam is still active. SY Country is also worth a look.
