They weren't, all the Smiths bass lines were written by Andy Rourke. He said that he "always tried to write a song inside a song with the basslines" and I think he did just that. Check out the book 'Songs that saved your life' if you don't believe me.

Sorry for the late reply, didn't notice this question until now. The pickups are stock. I recorded the bass directly into the camcorder and I probably rolled the tone knob back a bit to fatten it up.
