  • Born in 1980, I've been watching football since 3. This is THE best English performance I have ever seen in my life, eclipsing the 5-1 over Germany in 2001. The Dutch were feared with their 'total football' at that time, and Ajax were one of the best European sides around too... we made them look like schoolboys. We even 'allowed' them to score the one goal which knocked Scotland out. Brilliant.

  • @njclondon2009 - I was born in 1989, But if their is one England match which i would of liked to experience live, it would be this one, The third Goal is just beautiful, And is also why Sheringham was one of my favorite strikers (i support Man united btw) He wasn't prolific like Shearer, but he was Unselfish and created alot of Goals, It was a great Team throughout. :)

  • What a team that England side was. The days when the fans are with the players.

  • @ChristianJBJ - I would love England to perform like this next year, Imagine beating Holland 4-1 at euro 2012, I would love it :)

  • Teddy Sheringham was two-footed had an amazing football brain and gift for space and dimension -completely unselfish and a really unique story of working his way up through the ranks. We need more players like Teddy on the field. If you look at his passing there was never a wasted pass by him. He was as good as Paul Scholes, Gascoigne and Hoddle on distribution of the ball - he just was never given enough credit. People may dispute all of the above I know!. If England are to be successful again

  • @ChristianJBJ People rediculed and wrote off the team, manager and players before 96 and 1990 - the fact that England have been written off after WC 2010 is no bad thing, especially when you've got Gerard, A johnson, Rooney, Wilshire, Jones, Cole, Parker etc in the side - lack of quality certainly isn't the problem. Lack of belief in the public who think we have a God given right to walk into the semis is. bring on 2012.

  • it waas heart what won this, they had better players 'on paper' but they weren't 'England'

  • Remember this match very well. I was 13 at the time and I became an England fan that summer. (from Norway) Sinced that I always supported England in every championchip.

  • @ClassicEngland i was born in 89 too and remember this!!! i was 7.

i remember the goal agaisnt germany in the early minutes very vividly.

i tease my college peers who were born in 94 they missed out the best england performance in living memory.

  • I was at that match. What an atmospher, old Wembley was falling to bits but it was great

  • What a great line up

  • My favourite England team from the past. I also enjoyed watching the team in 98.

I miss this England team. :'(

  • @njclondon2009

1990 Germany had the better side, but England played fabulous in the semis and, with a deadly Gary Lineker, stretched the Germans to the limits.

1996 England had the better team. There were no Matthaus, Voller, Brehme any longer in the German line-up, and Klinsmann was out injured. Moller and Sammer apart this was a bunch of journeymen. While England played with Shearer, McManaman, Sheringham, Gascogine, Anderton, Ince, Pierce, Platt. They should have won the competition.

  • @UBchristennis

True. Klinsmann said that Sheringham was the best striking partner he had in his career.

  • @Myrrdin33 I wasn't alive for 66, unfortunately, and barely remember 86. But I do remember in 90 we weren't great. Apart from a great display against West Germany (as in 96), we were lucky to get as far as we did - especially against Cameroon. But I do agree, that it was one of our most memorable tournements. I blubbed like a schoolgirl when Nessun Dorma came on after losing to the Germans on penalties - can't really think of a better World Cup that Italia '90 on the whole.
