In this vid, Jay is preparing for All-West (TN) Honor Band auditions. This vid was shot about three weeks ago (from posting date). Between when this vid was shot and the actually audition, he made several changes and cleaned it up a bit (time, tempo, dynamics, etc.). But still, this represents his timpani playing in general. The auditions were held on January 9, 2010. Jay placed in the top junior high group (9th grade and below)- Blue Band- for the third consecutive year. He plans to move on to saxophone next year. Jay is 13 years old and in the 8th grade (just answering a frequently asked question in advance).

  • COOL! this was the timpani piece for All West TN junior band and I got 1st chair blue band!!! by the way... Im Kevin Huang

  • @duokid360 Okay, I remember seeing you there. Too bad it was canceled. You have some pretty cool yo-yo vids up. Why don't you have any percussion vids up?

  • @oldchops No Time, and were u 2nd chair???

  • @duokid360 Well, the next time you think about putting up another yo-yo vid, just do a percussion vid instead. But again, you have some nice yo-yo skills and tricks. As a result of you having a little (or maybe more than a little) more luck than me in that audition format, yes, I was 2nd chair. Congratulations on 1st chair; obviously you are a very good percussionist!

  • Was this filmed at Memphis drum shop? The background looks exactly the same haha

  • @tenniscrazy2 Yes, it was!

  • The dampening needs a little work, and tell Jay that when he rolls on a Timpani, he can't land on the drum head with the mallets close to each other like on snare. He needs to learn the art of rolling with the mallet strikes in the same spot everytime...gives a better sound. Jay is THE MAN!
