John Frusciante - Scratches
Album: Inside Of Emptiness (2004)

Inside of Emptiness is the sixth album by John Frusciante, and the fourth album of a six album series released from June 2004 to February 2005. It features Josh Klinghoffer and Omar Rodríguez-López as guest musicians.

Recorded in March and published in October 2004, John's fastest album to date might as well be the first one to think of when someone who hasn't followed his career and who's a fan of Red Hot Chili Peppers asks what to start with. From the distorted hot rocking beats of What I Saw to the melancolic falsetto of Scratches, with the floor vibrating from the screams in 666 and hearts melting at the warmth and openess of I'm Around and cruel reality of Look On, the song which features one of John's best guitar solos ever; Inside Of Emptiness is most likely the album where no skipping will occur, no matter who you are. Lyrically, just like all of John's other albums, it is much more complex. According to the author himself, three songs on the album were written while thinking about British occultist/mystic Aleister Crowley. Some of the music critics are refering to Inside Of Emptiness as something similar to what Shadows Collide With People would sound had it been unpolished and more raw. On the other side, this is obviously album where the electric guitar dominates, unlike on SCWP where each song has an accoustic guitar as the base instrument. Apart from usual contributor Josh Klinghoffer, the album also features a guest appearance of The Mars Volta's guitarist, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, and therefore the first of two times he and John experimented with what John called "joined guitars". Introverted, yet somewhat furious, slow-speaking yet unstoppable as he's always been; John'd created yet another memorable chapter in the history of modern rock music.

Lyrics:

(One, two, three, four)

The scratches of a dark night
The rashes of foresight
And I wanted you, oh-oh-uh

The weight of my freezing
I had come to you
The face I was given
I have no similarities to
The spaces in the law look
Like the faces in a word book
I get by,
I get by

The matches of opportunities
The last thing I've never seen
And I scream to you, oh-uh

The pain I was needing (oooh)
Was sort of true
The one aim I was clearing (oooh)
Was the walls that grew
The crazes I overlooked
The leans into the cook
And I did,
And I did

And I was screaming bloody murder
And I was one with pain
And I stopped by the road side
'Cuz this is from where I came

My God but it's so far away
It would seem accidents have gone straight to you
And you've changed your point of view
And the places you're going to
I got crowded,
I get crowded

And I'm so glad that you're mine
It twists up the fabric of time
And I'm useless,
Yes, I'm useless

And your faces are bodies
And your hands are feet
Let me roll around
In things I can't believe
But I tried
Yes I tried
And I tried
You know I tried

* The "I was one with pain" line is "when the charges came" in the official lyrics.

  • @TheGroumpfy Yeah, maybe a few seconds before that now that I listen to it again but thanks anyways!

  • @youisretard When it gets loud (at "And I Was Screaming Bloody Murder" and so on), I think he uses a pick.

  • WHY THE FUCK I CANT FIND THE PAST RECEDES OFFICIAL VIDEO ANYMORE ... WTF COVER ?!?!?

  • Is this finger picked or does he use a pick? Or does he finger pick in the beginning and use a pick for the rest?

  • @zylophone53 They actually do have backing vocals... Josh Klinghoffer has an amazing range and what about before John joined and rejoined the band? Old school rhcp is awesome along with one hot minute. Be more open minded.

  • everybody knows: at the end of a rainbow lies a pot of gold. but at its beginning i´m sure there is a flat disc with an inscription: John Frusciante Inside Of Emptiness!
